Joardi Gual
l has been Non-Executive Chairman of VidaCaixa since April 2021. He also serves on the Board of Directors of Telefônica Brasil and the Advisory Board of Telefónica España. Gual holds a PhD in Economics from the University of California-Berkeley (1987) and is a Research Fellow at the Center for Economic Policy Research (CEPR) in London. Between 2016 and 2021, he was Chairman of CaixaBank, following his role as Chief Economist and Executive Director of Strategic Planning and Studies at CaixaBank, and Managing Director of Strategic Planning and Development at CriteriaCaixa. He joined the "la Caixa" group in 2005.
He has been on the boards of Telefónica, Erste Group Bank, and Repsol, and held leadership roles, including Vice President of the Círculo de Economía, Vice President of COTEC, and Chairman of FEDEA. Internationally, Gual served as Economic Advisor in the Directorate-General for Economic and Financial Affairs at the European Commission in Brussels and was a visiting professor at the University of California-Berkeley, the Université Libre de Bruxelles, and the Barcelona Graduate School of Economics.
Since March 2022, Gual has been an Associate at OXERA Consulting LLP (London) and serves on the boards of the CEDE Foundation and the CIC Cultural Institution. Recently, he was appointed SUERF Fellow and joined the Advisory Board of the Spanish Institute of Financial Analysts.
Gual has published extensively on banking, European integration, and competition policy. He regularly contributes to La Vanguardia and other media outlets. His latest book, Trust Has No Price: Confidence in Capitalism and Public Policies, will be released in April 2024.
