Diplomat and Deputy Secretary for Climate in the Mediterranean
Grammenos Mastrojeni, is a diplomat, professor, and writer who has been a pioneer in research and action on the social, geostrategic, and economic impacts of environmental degradation. Until August 2019, he served as Coordinator for the Environment and Head of Science-Policy Interface at the Italian Development Cooperation, where he was the Ministry of Foreign Affairs' lead negotiator on water, land, and ocean issues.
He was also a member of the delegations to the UNFCCC and the UNCBD. His leadership roles have included Co-Chairing the G7 Working Group on Climate and Fragility, Chairing the UN Mountain Partnership, and Co-Chairing the Global Islands Partnership. Currently, he serves as Deputy Secretary General of the Union for the Mediterranean, overseeing Action on Energy and Climate.
In addition to his diplomatic work, Mastrojeni is a Professor of Environment and Geostrategy at various think tanks and universities and serves on several scientific committees. His academic contributions are extensive, including numerous articles, official reports, and six books focused on the human impacts of environmental degradation. Through his work, Mastrojeni has significantly influenced policy and academic discourse on environmental issues, highlighting the crucial intersection between environmental challenges and global stability and security. His ongoing efforts continue to shape international strategies and frameworks to address the complex challenges of climate change and environmental sustainability.
